Shay Alfia
Born in Jerusalem in 1990, is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Her artworks originate from continuous material research engaged with light, glass, and noble metals, incorporating ancient techniques, installation, and photography. In her research, she aims to examine the phenomenon of reflection in its physical, cultural, and historical aspects, establishing a body of work dedicated to the metaphysics of reflective objects.
By applying ancient techniques to create reflective surfaces, she places thin layers of noble metals on glass, resulting in reflective surfaces with varying opacities. The silver halides, which served during the invention of the camera to capture the moment and fix it on the glass plate, now go through a chemical process, leading to abstract stains that reflect space and the observer in an obscured way. Furthermore, her works delve into the documentation of art history, blending different eras and mediums. After creating the reflective surface, Alfia places objects and scenes reminiscent of conventions and tactics for documenting reality and captures the reflection. The reflective stains become abstract paintings, which serve as real-time documents of what is occurring in front of them.
Her work aims to challenge representation and image in the prevailing individualistic age and to expand the limits of visual and conceptual perception through reflections.
