When I first met LaVaughn Belle, it was during a rigorous capoeira class in the blazing Saturday morning sun in St. Croix. She moved like a cat between the delicate and the fast just like she does between her multitude of art media: film, paper art, painting, photography, installation and intervention art.
In the upcoming exhibit Hideaway at Maufé Gallery on February 19, the artist shows a hand-made book, a film and a series of paper plate drawings. Hideaway has particular significance since it studies the relationship between Denmark and Danske Vestindien (today’s US Virgin Islands). Please join us at Danica Gallery on Thursday, January 8 for the collaborative show ‘VerKlimt’ by Amy Konwerski and Tomas Lanner. The art is inspired by and dedicated to the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). On Friday, Salt-Gallery’s season opens with a collaborative event at Walsh Metal Works Gallery, the soft opening of a group show featuring sculpture by Mike Walsh and paintings by Mark Mulherrin & Tomas Lanner. The show focuses on the organic vision through the power of nature, each of the artists unique, but their art working in unison. The three men, who have all lived and worked in St. Croix, are inspired by both the worlds around them and their imagination; achieving an aesthetic that is both strong and delicate.
