Luis Gutierrez pedals a rickshaw around Phoenix as a way to supplement his artistic career. He says it offsets the often lonely work of the artist, and he gets a lot of insipration from rickshaw conversations. However, Luis is also disillusioned by the skanky neighborhoods he sometimes has to ride through. He says ‘the heroin dealer is the fat cat who makes fat bank off people who aren’t even fat.’

As you may remember, Luis is in the Remix group exhibition about the cultural identity of today’s young Native American artists, curated by the Heard Museum in Phoenix. Remix has now travelled to New York, to the National Museum of the American Indian, where it opened on June 7. Luis and the other 14 artists had dinner with the executive committee of the National Congress of American Indians, which consists of the heads of all Native American tribes from Central America to Alaska. Luis felt honored and humbled by the event and commented that the dining room had a lot of strong souls that night.

Before the exhibition left Phoenix, two of Luis’ paintings were purchased by the Heard Museum’s Executive Director Frank Goodyear and later donated to the museum’s permanent collection.
